Many people want to fully understand the safety measures of any vent-free unit before they install it in their home. Fortunately, the clean-burning, low emission vent-free system is worry-free. All of our vent-free products are safety tested and certified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), so our customers can be assured that safety is our priority. The key safety component in all the vent-free heating units we sell is called the ODS system.

The Oxygen Detection Safety-Pilot, or Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS), ensures that air levels are safe in your home. This device works by detecting the level of oxygen in the room of your vent-free unit. It automatically shuts off gas supply to the unit if the oxygen level falls too low, protecting the quality of air in your living space. When functioning normally, the gas pilot in your unit burns, when exposed to air, with 22-22.5% oxygen. If, in the rare case the oxygen level drops to 18-18.5%, the ODS system immediately reacts by shutting off the gas supply.

The ODS device has been in use in the United States since 1980. All ANSI certified vent-free products include an ODS. Mr. Vent Free only carries ANSI certified appliances. Every unit design must pass additional safety tests at independent laboratories. Data from 30+ years of manufacturing and use in over 17 million vent-free units shows that there have been no air quality deaths associated with vent-free products with an ODS. The safety record is similarly impressive in other countries with certified vent-free products.

With the ODS system working automatically at all times, there is very little you need to do to be sure your unit is functioning safely. Simply have your vent-free appliance inspected once a year by a professional technician, who will check that the ODS is working normally. Also, follow the safety and cleaning instructions that come with your unit. You can rest assured that your home and family are safe every time you enjoy your vent-free fireplace!
