Are you concerned that vent-free fireplaces and stoves increase indoor air pollution? Vent-free appliances such as fireplaces, heaters, and heaters do not have a chimney, so where does the waste from the combustion of natural gas or LP go?

Among most experts, this issue was settled some time ago. In 1996, an independent research commission was set up through the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance to measure what, if any, air pollution was released as a by-product gas burning vent-free appliances. Using the most up to date standards at the time, they ran test on hundreds of thousands of vent-free appliances. Their conclusion was that these appliances all measured well below the nationally set guidelines for indoor air quality.

These studies took into account several factors including:

  • the five main heating regions in the U.S.
  • various types of housing construction materials
  • a variety of volumes and shapes of areas being heated

The studies focused on the five major indoor air quality indicators: oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and water vapor (humidity). The researchers concluded that vent-free gas heating products easily meet all indoor air quality safety requirements, even when used for an extended period of time. This research has been peer-reviewed and is largely referenced as the basis for acceptance of the safety of vent-free appliances by both national and state agencies.

It also should be noted that vent-free appliances marketed in the U.S are rigorously safety tested. This safety testing is overseen by The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a non-profit organization set up to ensure the health and safety of consumers as well as the protection of the environment. The ANSI oversees the development process and is constantly upgrading its safety standards to encompass the increasing variety of appliances and types of home environments found in the marketplace. To top it off, every manufacturer must submit their vent-free appliances for safety testing to independent laboratories.

Vent-free appliances are 99% efficient, which means they burn up most of the fuel and have very little waste. The warm air is re-circulated back into the room. All the vent-free appliances we sell at Mr. Vent Free come with an automatic shut-off if the oxygen levels in the room become too low.
